On September 27, Reynolds released a Youtube video titled “Deadpool Update.” In the clip, the actor claims for the 2024 film, he has “really searched my soul on this one.” He builds up the surprising reveal with vague statements such as “His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special.” After a long time of reflection, he claims they finally have one idea. He turns around and asks “Hey Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Hugh Jackman appears nonchalantly, walking up the stairs and replying, “Yeah sure, Ryan.”

In a new video update, Hugh Jackman makes an appearance alongside Reynolds, revealing snippets of what’s to come in the new Deadpool film. Reynolds addresses fans’ concerns about how Wolverine’s return may impact Logan‘s storyline. He states, “Logan died in Logan, Not touching that.” When the Deadpool actor began to explain the plot of their upcoming film, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham! Drowns out the actors’ voices, as the two gesticulate their hands and give wild expressions.

Wolverine fans have expressed their excitement over the surprising news.

Hugh Jackman decided to quit the role in 2017. Jerry Seinfeld had told Jackman over dinner to “Leave the party before it’s too late.” Seinfeld advised that Jackman should reserve his creative energy for future projects. This was enough to convince the X-Men actor to quit his nearly two-decade role.

Jackman has been in the X-Men universe for over a decade, being branded in the Guinness World Records for most MCU appearances in 2017. After leaving the MCU, he had taken Seinfeld’s advice and took on unique roles. He starred in the musical film spectacle, The Greatest Showman, as P.T. Barnum, a ring leader responsible for uniting outcasts to deliver entertaining shows. Jackman proved that not only could he daunt the extreme physicality of an anti-hero, but he can also deliver excellent showman skills with fluid dance choreography.

Jackman’s recent film, The Son, premiered at the Venice Film Festival, alongside other notable titles such as The Whale and Don’t Worry Darling. It has been nominated for a Golden Lion award for Best Film. While the movie’s directing and writing have received mixed reviews, Jackman’s performance alongside Laura Dern was unanimously praised by critics.

Before starting other endeavors in acting, his last appearance as Wolverine was meant to be in Logan (2017). He delivered an astonishing performance, revealing the humanity behind the withered character. In the action thriller, he is an alcoholic, filled with years of trauma and recurring thoughts of suicidal ideation. However, he becomes stuck with the decision of whether or not he should secure the lives and future of mutant-kind. As a result, critics have labeled the film as “The best superhero movie ever.”

According to a review by Stardust, they commented, “if this truly is Hugh Jackman’s final time playing him, he has definitely left the series on a high note.”

It’s agreed among fans that Logan was a great send-off to the character. No one could have expected his return, not even Hugh Jackman. But, years later, it appears the actor has other plans for Wolverine.

James Mangold, director of the critically acclaimed Logan, had tweeted his excitement about Hugh Jackman’s return. While at first fans thought the director was irritated at the revival of the canonically dead character, he quickly proved them wrong. He proclaims, “Oh my gosh! Everybody chill. Just kidding! I’m all good! LOGAN will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or worm hole, canon or non-canon or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what maddness my dear friends @VancityReynolds and @RealHughJackman cook up!”

It’s only natural that the superhero duo ended up working together on the new film. The two actors first worked with each other on X-Men Origins: Wolverine and have remained inseparable.

Over the years, Reynolds and Jackman have been known to prank each other to no end. The Deadpool actor had once hijacked an interview featuring Hugh Jackman for the film Eddie the Eagle, creating a hilarious interview. And let’s not forget the stapled Hugh Jackman mask in Deadpool (2016). Hugh would later clap back in 2018 in Ryan’s Instagram post, revealing an unhappy Reynolds in an ugly sweater.

Despite the fans’ excitement, many have questioned how Wolverine will be portrayed after his climactic death in Logan. What era of Wolverine will the Deadpool film immerse into? Will we return to Logan’s glory days at the height of his strength? Will audiences finally see a young bloodthirsty Wolverine beyond parental guidance ratings? The possibilities are endless for the character’s revival in the MCU.

While it’s unknown where the Deadpool franchise will take Hugh Jackman’s character, fans are excited for Wolverine’s anticipated return to the big screen.
