The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction Ceremony was held on Saturday, November 5. Many celebrities came to honor this year’s inductees, but one face was noticeably missing: Alanis Morissette. The “You Oughta Know” hitmaker issued a statement on social media regarding her absence.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Carly Simon, and Pat Benatar. Alanis Morissette was scheduled to perform a duet with Olivia Rodrigo honoring Carly Simon’s iconic track “You’re So Vain.” Unfortunately, Alanis dropped out of the performance last minute.

After rumors began circulating over the Internet, the “Ironic” singer wanted to clear the air. She begins her statement by expressing her adoration for female artists Carly Simon, Olivia Rodrigo, Dolly Parton, Janet Jackson, Pat Benatar, Sheryl Crow, Pink, Brandi Carlile, and Sara Bareilles.

Morissette’s statement expresses her feelings over the raging sexism and blatant disrespect that continues to occur on a daily basis for women songwriters. She continues, “I have spent decades in an industry that is rife with an overarching anti-woman sentiment and have tolerated a lot of condescension and disrespectfulness, reduction, dismissiveness, contract-breaching, unsupportiveness, exploitation and psychological violence (and more) throughout my career.”

Morissette has often chosen to “suck it up” because connecting with fans through her music is important to her. She ends the post on a positive note, writing, “Thankfully, I am at a point in my life where there is no need for me to spend time in an environment that reduces women.” She maintains that she will continue to show up for more diverse environments.

We commend Alanis Morissette for speaking out on issues that are pertinent in the industry today. Olivia Rodrigo went on to tackle “You’re So Vain” solo, doing a wonderful job. Her performance is available to watch below. Congratulations to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2022.
