Orion Pictures has given movie lovers a new glimpse at its upcoming film, Women Talking. The production company released a new poster for the project on Tuesday.

Women Talking is based on Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name. The film tells the story of eight women from a Mennonite colony deciding what to do after discovering men from their community have drugged and sexually assaulted many of the women. The assaults rattle the women’s lives, forcing them to question their faith to save themselves and their children.

The drama stars Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Claire Foy (The Crown), and Jessie Buckley (The Last Daughter). Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, and Frances McDormand round out the cast, in addition to Sarah Polley (Take this Waltz) as director. Brad Pitt, Lyn Lubicello, Bracantella, and Emily Jade Foley will also executive produce the film with Pitt’s Company, Plan B Entertainment.

Polley chose to direct the film after reading Toews’ novel. While maintaining the story’s integrity, the director elected not to include scenes of the assaults in the film. Instead, the plot focuses on the women coming together in the aftermath of the realization.

In a statement to Orion on this choice, she explained, “Though the backstory behind the events in Women Talking is violent, the film is not. We never see the violence that the women experienced. We see only short glimpses of the aftermath. Instead, we watch a community of women come together as they must decide, in a very short space of time, what their collective response will be.”

The official trailer and a sneak peek at the film’s production process were released by the entertainment company in October. The trailer features many harrowing scenes and quotes from the film, including one where Mara’s character voices, “Hope for the unknown is got. It is better than hatred of the familiar.”

Women Talking premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival. The film will debut to the public in select theaters on December 25. Fans can view the official trailer for Women Talking below
