Creator of the award-winning comedy crime film, The Gentleman, Guy Ritchie is releasing The Covenant starring former Marvel star, Jake Gyllenhaal.

On February 2, a new trailer was released for the anticipated action-packed Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. Coming off of his recent film Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, Ritchie’s new war film experiences a tonal shift from his previous comedic crime films.

From starring in gritty and emotionally intense movies such as Jarhead and Brothers, Gyllenhaal is no stranger to appearing in war narratives.

On the day the new trailer was released, the Donnie Darko actor stated in an Instagram post that “This film is so close to my heart and in just a few hours I get to share the trailer with you all.”

In Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, Gyllenhaal’s character, Sergeant John Kinley, is sent to one of his last missions in Afghanistan, where he teams up with an interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim), to survey the region.

The trailer reveals there’s more to Ahmed than Kinley realizes. When Kinley asks Ahmed why he chose to do such a dangerous job, Ahmed replies stating he needs money. However, a fellow soldier tells Kinley “Money isn’t the reason he wants this job.” It is also revealed that the Taliban had killed Ahmed’s son, detailing that Ahmed has a family in the battle-damaged country.

However, the stakes rise as Ahmed risks his own life carrying an injured Kinley across war-torn terrain. The two-minute video showcase glimpses of Ahmed taking care of Kinley’s wounds, and dragging him across the mountains.

After Kinley reaches safety, he realizes that Ahmed is now in danger and the government will do nothing to intervene. Because of this, Kinley decides to take on the Taliban by himself to save Ahmed and his family.

Known for embodying the ego-maniacal Homelander in The Boys, Anthony Starr is co-starring alongside Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim. From starring as Katniss Everdeen’s adversary in the Hunger Games to Emmy award-winning series Vikings, Alexander Ludwig will also be joining the star-studded cast. In addition, Emily Beecham (1899), Bobby Schofield (Cherry), Jason Wong (Alex Rider), and Fahim Fazil (Iron Man) will also be acting in the film.

The new trailer proves that the upcoming film will not only take audiences to the front lines but it’ll also take them on a journey through a man’s desire to pay his debts and love for one’s family. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant will hit theaters on April 21. Watch the trailer for the action-packed film down below.
