Taylor Swift Is IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year for the Third Time
With her many successful albums, it is clear that Taylor Swift “never goes out of style.” Since her debut, she has been reaching the top of the charts and selling out stadiums.
The year 2022 was a particularly big year for the pop star, with her latest album, Midnights. In addition, she had the re-released version of her album Red come out at the end of 2021. These are reasons why the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, called Swift the Global Recording Artist of the Year for 2022.

The IFPI is a non-profit organization that works to help and support recorded music and record producers. Their motto is “Representing the recording industry worldwide.” Since 2013, this organization has given a Global Recording Artist of the Year award to a chart-topping musician or band. This award is determined based on the height of the winner’s performance across music listening services. The award covers from digital to physical. It covers their whole body of work, not just the work released that year, to display their true dominance.

This is Swift’s third time winning this top award, with her first two times being in 2014 and 2019. For reference, 2014 is when her album 1989 came out, and 2019 was the year of Lover. Swift is the only person in the award’s history to win three times. BTS and Drake have each won twice. IFPI’s CEO, Frances Moore, commented, “Taylor is a truly magnificent international star, who continues to grow and evolve as an artist whilst maintaining an incredibly strong connection with her fans around the world.”

Along with an award for the top spot, the IFPI also announced a top 20 list of global recording artists for 2022. BTS is #2 after winning the award twice in a row the past two years. The other two-time winner Drake took the #3 spot, with Bad Bunny and The Weeknd at #4 and #5, respectively. The rest of the top ten included, in order, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, Harry Styles, Jay Chou, and Ed Sheeran.
The longevity of Swift’s career has been quite impressive. In perspective, when Swift first won this award, One Direction was in second place. Swift is still putting out hit album after hit album. There seems to be no stopping her. Between her current award and her last one in 2019, Swift was in second place on the charts. With her Eras tour starting later this year and possible re-recordings of more albums, Swift has much time left in the spotlight.
