Everyone is in town for the big space convention that occurs annually. Along the way, relationships are tested and possibly formed.

In addition, something extraterrestrial comes everyone’s way during this convention, which may lead to possible danger. The film is expected to release in theaters on June 16.

Like most of Wes Anderson’s films, Asteroid City has a stacked cast. The cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrian Brody, Liev Schreiber, and Steve Carell. Additional cast members include Maya Hawke, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Matt Dillon, Margot Robbie, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Jeff Goldblum, and more. It would be impressive if the film had even half of this cast. Anderson is pulling out all of the stops, especially in his stars.

The new poster for the film came out on March 28. While it did not reveal much about the film, it certainly built up some anticipation. The poster features a bright blue sky in the background with puffy white clouds. Underneath the sky, there are a bunch of tall rocks creating what looks to be the Grand Canyon. In front of the road, the film’s title is on a billboard with a picture of a crater. The top right of the poster lists all of this film’s big stars, which brought excitement to fans and prepared people for the trailer.

The trailer debuted on March 29 with bluegrass sounds of Johnny Duncan’s “Last Train to San Fernando.” The plot follows a single dad (Jason Schwartzman), who travels with his children until his car explodes in Asteroid City. The trailer then explains a titular event in Asteroid City, where on September 23, 3007 BCE, the Arid Plains asteroid impacted Earth. As a result of this momentous moment, the town celebrates this event annually.

This year, the extraterrestrials are making contact with Earth again. Meanwhile, Schwartzman’s character meets a famous actress, embodied by Johansson. Whatever happens, there will be combinations of science fiction and witty comedy,

Anderson has made a name for himself as one of the great directors of the twenty-first century. His films are known for their bright color schemes and clean aesthetics. These vibrant visuals, combined with the frequent deadpan dialogue, make his movies feel similar but different from the real world. Anderson is also known for his large celebrity casts. Those casts often include Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody, Jeff Goldblum, and usually many more A-listers. Anderson has a routine, and he knows how to stick to it.

Films like Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums helped Anderson gain notoriety, with the latter film receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In 2009, his stop-motion film Fantastic Mr. Fox led him to two more Oscar nominations. His next film was Moonrise Kingdom, which was one of his biggest financial successes.

He would go on to make The Grand Budapest Hotel, where he got his first Best Director nomination. His most recent film was The French Dispatch in 2021. Although it did not do well at the box office, the film garnered positive reviews. Anderson knows how to make enjoyable films, and this pattern is sure to continue.

Anderson first revealed that he was working on a new project in September 2020. He referred to it as a romance film. Filming began in August 2021 in Chinchón, Spain. Bill Murray announced the title in October 2021, when he was attached to the project. Unfortunately, he dropped out due to COVID-19.

Asteroid City is Anderson’s first film since his debut, Bottle Rocket, to not have his collaborator, Murray. However, Anderson was able to write the film with Roman Coppola, his frequent screenwriting partner.

Before the movie hits theaters, Asteroid City will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Fans can watch the trailer for the upcoming film below.
