After a swath of comments on the singer’s body, Ariana Grande advocated for herself in a TikTok addressing her fans.

Ariana Grande’s fans have recently bombarded her with comments on her body, questioning her health. While some fans argue that the comments were purely made out of concern, having your body constantly scrutinized in the public eye is still disarming, regardless of the intent.

The concerns follow a post she made on Instagram to promote her makeup line, R.E.M Beauty. Many comments on the post were aimed at her body. One fan commented, “I am worried,” and another maliciously called her “old.” Some fans went as far as to deem her sick, drawing conclusions about her.

Earlier Tuesday, the star took to TikTok to address the comments and her fans. She candidly addressed her audience, expressing discomfort at being so closely monitored. “I just wanted to address your concerns about my body and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to,” she told her audience.

“I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies, no matter what. If you think you’re saying something good and well-intentioned, whatever it is — healthy, unhealthy, big, small, this, that, sexy, not sexy — … we should really work towards not doing that as much,” she added.

Finally, Grande addressed concerns over her body, stating, “I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy. But that, in fact, wasn’t my healthy, I know I shouldn’t have to explain that, but I do feel like maybe having an openness and some sort of vulnerability … something good might come from it.”

Clearly, Grande is happy and healthy. Though her fans may not have spoken with ill intent, the effects of any bodily scrutiny can be negative, especially to the extent she experiences it. On Instagram, she has 365 million followers – for perspective, the United States has a population of only 331 million. That is to say, Grande has to deal with the scrutiny of an entire nation’s worth of people. Still, she handled the situation unsurprisingly graciously.
