The story follows Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins) 10 years after the first Insidious film. As a college student, Dalton must face his demons from his childhood, and both father and son must fight to end them for good.

Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne), and Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey) return from their former roles in the first movie. The Red Door will be the fifth installment in the Insidious saga and will be directed by Wilson, who is also starring in the film.

The trailer first flashes back to the story from the first Insidious film. Josh is forced to relive events from his childhood to save his son from the very place he ventured when he was young: The Further. Dalton suffers from the same sleep-traveling phenomenon that Josh had as a child. This time, he went too far to a place he could not escape from, consequently causing demons to haunt their new home.

Wilson talked to IGN in an exclusive interview to explain his reasoning for continuing the Insidious films. “I wanted to unpack everything that happened at the end of Insidious 2. I really wanted to finish this Lambert trilogy and I wanted to, again, without giving the storyline away, I wanted to push this generational curse even more. What does that mean? When does a curse become a blessing? Is a blessing a curse?” he stated.

Wilson has worked closely with James Wan in the Insidious and Conjuring franchises, and Wan endorses his directorial experimentation with Insidious: The Red Door. “I was thrilled to hear Patrick wanted to continue the journey of Insidious as a director. I’ve gotten to know Patrick very well over the years of collaboration, and I know what a film buff he is. He is extremely knowledgeable about cinema and its craft…So it felt right that he was making the transition into directing, and I couldn’t be happier that he’s doing it with the Insidious franchise,” he stated.

Insidious: The Red Door will hit theaters on July 7. Fans can watch the trailer for the fifth installment of the franchise down below.
