The infamous French fashion house, Saint Laurent, will launch a film production company with creative director Anthony Vacarello at the helm.

Aptly titled “Saint Laurent Productions,” the company will partner with world-renowned filmmakers. Currently, two projects will premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The first is Strange Way of Life (2023) which involves Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar and actors Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal. The second is currently unnamed.

While no information regarding the second short film has come out, there have been speculations. Reportedly, it was by Jean-Luc Godard. If true, it would mark Godard’s last directorial work before his death in September 2022.

Vacarello, a self-proclaimed cinephile, stated that the production company will give him “the opportunity to expand the vision I have for Saint Laurent through a medium that has more permanence than clothes.”

Vacarello elaborated, “You can still see a film in 10 or 30 years, if it’s good. In some ways, making a film can be more impactful than a seasonal collection. For me it’s a natural extension to another field of creativity that perhaps is more general and popular.”

The creative head hopes this will continue the brand’s long relationship with film. In his statement, he gave examples of times the fashion house has been connected to films and starlets. “Everyone keeps recalling Catherine Deneuve in ‘Belle de Jour,’ but there are many more Yves collaborated with: Luis Buñuel film, Romy Schneider, Jean Seberg, and Sophia Loren.”

Saint Laurent Productions will also film projects with Paolo Sorrentino, David Cronenberg, Abel Ferrara, Wong Kar Wai, Jim Jarmusch, and Gaspar Noé. About these directors, Vacarello explained, “These directors never fail to open my mind and, in a way, the singular, radical vision they bring to cinema has made me the person I am today.”

Many fans of the brand celebrated the news on social media.

While no footage of the upcoming projects has been released, we are sure they will not disappoint. Vacarello is known for his chic aesthetic- which often involves vintage styles and sleek lines. Recently, they have dressed Zoe Kravitz in gorgeous looks. We can not wait to see the brand’s signature style reflected in this new medium. For more exciting fashion news, click here
