There have been discussions of a Beetlejuice sequel for years. Now, those discussions are becoming a reality. The announcement for this sequel was in March of this year and Beetlejuice 2 will reportedly come out on November 17, 2024. Like the original, Tim Burton will be directing this film. At this moment, there are no further plot details available to the public, however, there are updates on cast announcements for the film.

With her recent success on Wednesday, Jenna Ortega has cemented herself as a young gothic icon. Therefore, it should be no surprise that she will be a part of this film. There have been confirmations that Ortega will be in Beetlejuice 2 as Lydia’s (Winona Ryder) daughter. This casting will reunite Ortega with Burton, as Burton was a director and executive producer on Wednesday. Furthermore, Wednesday’s creators, Alfred Gough, and Miles Millar, will work on the Beetlejuice 2 screenplay creating for a spooky reunion.

There was also another new casting announcement, but this one has a little mystery. Emmy Winner Justin Theroux (The Mosquito Coast) will be in this creepy sequel. There has been no word on which character Theroux will embody, adding to the secrecy around the plot. Theroux has been able to display his comedy and dramatic chops in his previous works, so there is a lot that his part could hold. Currently, Theroux is starring as G. Gordon Liddy in the political miniseries White House PlumbersBeetlejuice 2 is his only project in production at the moment, but Beetlejuice fans can’t wait for his character reveal.

This film will not have entirely new cast members. On the contrary, there will be plenty of returning actors from the original movie. Of course, a sequel to Beetlejuice would not work without the return of the original titular character: Beetlejuice. Keaton is set to reprise as the snazzy demon in the upcoming film. In addition, Winona Ryder, who starred as the moody Lydia Deetz in the original film, will also be coming back. There has been no word if other original cast members such as Alec Baldwin (Tar), Geena Davis (She-Ra and the Princess of Power), or Catherine O’Hara (Central Park), will return. However, there will be more casting announcements as this movie gets deeper into production.

Another returning member of the original film is Danny Elfman, who created the soundtrack for the original movie. Elfman has expressed joy about the sequel, stating “I love being a fly on the wall when he’s shooting. I’ll be doing that in a couple of months, as you may know, on another Tim Burton project. That is very exciting to return to that world.” He continued, “It’s perfect, you know? Everybody else has to play the next generation, except for Michael. I mean, he’s still like really fit and really active and really on it. And with the Beetlejuice makeup, I can’t even imagine it’s going to look like he’s changed practically at all. So, I can’t wait for that.”

The original film is about a couple who recently died and are now haunting their old house. They are doing this alongside Beetlejuice. He is a bio-exorcist who has been dead and haunting for a long time. They are scaring out the Deetz family, whose daughter, Lydia, is able to see these ghosts. She befriends the ghosts, as she is an outcast who did not want to live in this house in the first place. Soon, chaos ensues, thanks to Beetlejuice, and the problems created become a matter of life and death.

Beetlejuice has spawned an animated series, video games, a Broadway musical, and now a sequel. This film has been a part of many generations, and its scary yet silly story will continue for future generations.
