The trial of the Menendez Brothers was one of the biggest murder trials in modern history. Now, Ryan Murphy is dramatizing this story for the upcoming season of his true crime anthology series Monster.

Ryan Murphy is teaming up with Netflix to tell this real-life crime story. On May 1, Netflix announced that Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is in the works. It will follow the true story of the brothers who murdered their parents. This will be the second season of Monster, following the Jeffrey Dahmer season. The upcoming season will come out sometime in 2024. In addition, Netflix will be making a documentary film about the brothers. The streaming service is certainly making the most of this one-of-a-kind murder.

The announcement was through a teaser video. The video featured real audio of Lyle Menendez on a 911 phone call. The video starts by displaying the setting of August 20, 1989, in Beverly Hills, California. Lyle Mendez is crying into the phone to the 911 operator, telling them that someone just shot his parents. When asked if the shooter is still there, he answered, “I don’t think so.” Then, the screen fades to the title card and “Only on Netflix 2024”. If this teaser is any indication, this season will have a lot of suspense.

In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted for the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. The murder occurred on August 20, 1989, when Lyle and Erik were 31 and 28. At first, they claimed that they were at a movie theater during the murders.

However, the police arrested them in 1990 when Erik admitted what happened to his psychologist. Their trial began in 1993 and it became a big television event. While law enforcement originally suspected their motives to be financial, the brothers admitted to being victims of years of abuse. Nevertheless, they are currently in Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility for life without parole.

The Menendez Brothers’ story comes after Jeffrey Dahmer’s story in this anthology series. The first season’s title was Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Starring Evan Peters, this season explored the twisted mind of the serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer. The season had a lot of praise, with Peters winning a Golden Globe for the role. However, the season had controversy for glorifying the situation and not being respectful to the victims.

After this season, Netflix renewed Monster for two more anthological seasons about different true crime stories. The next one is about the Menendez Brothers, while the season after could be anyone.

Ryan Murphy has a lot to work on at this moment. Currently, the twelfth season of his acclaimed series American Horror Story is in production. His first responder series, 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star, have renewals for their seventh and fifth seasons. In addition, his thriller series The Watcher, which came out in October 2022, has a second season in the works. Other series of his with upcoming second seasons are Ratched and Feud. The latter of which is an anthology series. Along with this new and exciting season of Monster, Murphy is keeping busy.
