Spotify created an exclusive playlist explicitly curated to represent the designers’ inspiration for this year’s New York Fashion Week.

There is no doubt that music brings a fashion runway to life. This Fall, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Spotify collaborated to create a playlist full of New York Fashion Week’s most influential music. Designers from brands like Khaite, Mara Hoffman, Alice + Olivia, and Caroline Herrara contributed to the Spotify playlist “The Soundtrack Behind The Runway.”

What makes music an imperative element of a fashion show? AP News writer Brooke Lefferts quotes designer Michael Kors, stating the runway shows themselves are composed to mimic short films. The themes and music go hand-in-hand with the designers’ expectations for their shows. Similar to the soundtrack of a movie.

“Kors’ latest collection featured some bohemian flair: miniskirts, big belts, and high boots made of suede, and fringe accents with a modern sensibility. It was an ode to strong women who influenced him in his early life, like Tina Turner, Jane Fonda, and Gloria Steinem, who sat in the front row,” Lefferts stated.

It’s not uncommon for musical artists to attend these shows. Jennifer Lopez, Ice Spice, Doja Cat, and Avril Lavigne are just a few of many. In addition to musicians, celebrity partners, and collaborators attend these shows, most notably Dua Lipa and Versace.

The time designers spend with their colleagues to bring the entire show to life, accompanied by the music consuming the space around the bustling design studio: every lyric, every beat, and every musician selected to deliver a message to the audience. Every piece the model walks down the runway in is carefully constructed as the song chosen to match her strut.

Will the playlist continue to be a curated collection of songs from existing fashion shows, or will it begin to influence what shows we see in the future? Read Brooke Leffters’s full article here and Sanika Achrekar’s article, where she has the entire playlist available.
