Victoria Beckham Reveals All About Her Marriage in New Documentary
David and Victoria Beckham break the silence on their two-decade-long marriage and its struggles in their four-part Netflix documentary, Beckham.
The power couple bare their hearts, in the early days of love and commitment. Beckham, a four-part captivating documentary, takes a turn in the final episode. The duo candidly opens up about a challenging period during David’s peak success in 2003.
Reflecting on their relationship during David’s career at Real Madrid back in 2003, Victoria Beckham shares her inner struggles. In a candid moment within the documentary, she confesses, that it was “the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my entire life.”
“It felt like the world was against us,” she further reveals, “And here’s the thing, we were against each other if I’m being completely honest.” She opened up about how hard it was for her, “You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other.”
“It was a nightmare. From the minute we opened the door in the morning, the press were there in cars and everywhere we went, we would get followed,” she recounted. Beckham also revealed that she had started to resent her husband for it.
“There were some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with,” David added, reflecting on the pressure they faced. He also stated that this caused a rift between them, “It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage. Every time that we woke up we felt that there was something else.”
“Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters and at that time we needed to fight for each other and we needed to fight for our family and what we had was worth fighting for,” he added.
The couple, whose love story began at a soccer match in 1997, got married on July 4, 1999. Throughout their over two decades of marriage, they have 4 children: Harper, Cruz, Romeo, and Brooklyn.
In a candid chat with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs after renewing their vows in 2017, David opened up about their marriage. “We know each other better than anybody. People have talked about, ‘Do we stay together because it’s a brand?’ Of course not. We stay together because we love each other because we have four amazing children.”
David stated that they do have struggles, “That’s part of relationships. It’s part of marriage. It’s part of having children. It’s part of having responsibilities.”
Beckham is available to stream on Netflix.
