Poor Things, starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, is available on digital on February 27. Based on the 1992 novel by author Alasdair Gray, Poor Things follows Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a woman in Victorian England who is brought back to life by surgeon Dr. Godwin (Willem Dafoe). The film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara, explores themes of feminism, philosophy, and self-discovery.

Bella starts the film with the mannerisms of a child, generally confined to the walls of her home. After his student assistant, Max (Ramy Youssef), develops romantic feelings for Bella, Dr. Godwin approves his request to marry her. Bella accepts the proposal but has second thoughts as she grows into womanhood and develops more questions about the world.

The rest of the film follows Bella’s journey after running off with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) and her exposure to life and its complex principles and experiences. Christopher Abbott, Kathryn Hunter, Jerrod Carmichael, Hanna Schygulla, Margaret Qualley, and Suzy Bemba make the supporting cast.

Poor Things premiered at the 80 Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2023. The film was released in select theaters on December 8, 2023, and widely on January 19. There were plans to release the film shortly after its Venice premiere on September 8, 2023, but it was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Deadline reported

The film has been met with critical acclaim for its themes, set design, costuming, and performances, namely of Emma Stone. At the 81 Golden Globe Awards, Poor Things won the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Award. Stone received the Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Award.

In her acceptance speech, Stone reflected on her experience bringing the character to life, likening the film to a rom-com. “I see this as a rom-com…Bella falls in love with life itself rather than a person. She accepts the good and the bad in equal measure, and that really made me look at life differently.” Poor Things is nominated for 11 Academy Awards at the upcoming 96 Academy Awards on March 10, 2024.

Poor Things can be digitally purchased or rented on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Vudu.
