MaXXXine, the final film in Ti West’s terrifying trilogy, finally came to theaters on July 5. Mia Goth, reprising her role as Maxine Minx, lit the screen alongside a star-studded cast.

Set in Los Angeles in 1985, the film’s sprawling narrative includes true Hollywood history and the gruesome gore Ti West fans have come to expect.

Mia Goth, already an established scream queen, takes things up a notch in MaXXXine. We have been waiting to hear from her ambitious character since X (2022), from which she was the sole survivor. This film fully displays those survival instincts (which picks up six years after X) as Minx pursues stardom while evading a mysterious killer who seems to anticipate her every move.

Things are off to a good start when Minx secures a role in The Puritan II, a fictitious horror film directed by Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown). But things go south after an unwelcome visitor appears at the peep show where Minx works nights, and she becomes embroiled in a sinister plot with violent consequences.

Joining Goth and Debicki onscreen are Moses Sumney (Creed), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective), Bobby Cannavale (Nine Perfect Strangers), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets).

Kevin Bacon, who portrays a dogged private investigator, and Halsey, Maxine Minx’s friend and associate in adult entertainment, also contribute their talents to the film. Neither could contain their excitement upon its release, and Halsey expressed gratitude for being involved with the project.

Bacon also shared some behind-the-scenes shots to celebrate.

Bacon’s style onset is everything we’d hope for a 1980s P.I. in Los Angeles, replete with a cream-colored suit and bandaged nose. Ti West shared with Entertainment Weekly that the film had some film noir elements, explaining why Bacon’s character is reminiscent of Jack Nicholson’s role in Chinatown. That wouldn’t be the film’s only reference, as it also features the Bates Motel, a nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

The film also acknowledges local history by considering an actual serial killer active at the time, Richard Ramirez. The hunt for Ramirez becomes a part of the tangled web Minx finds herself in, and there seems to be danger at every turn.

Horror fans are chuffed with the release, sharing their appreciation online.

We must agree that the three films—X, Pearl, and now MaXXXine—deliver on every glamorous, gory promise Ti West has made. We can’t wait to see what’s in store next.

MaXXXine will likely be available to stream on Max later this year, but details are pending.
