‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ Is Getting an Exciting New Sequel

Paramount Pictures

Frangela, rejoice: one of the most beloved rom-coms of the 2000s could be making a comeback. A sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is officially in development at Paramount, with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce. More than two decades after Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry first drove each other deliciously crazy, the studio is betting that audiences are ready to fall in love all over again.

Before you start humming “You’re So Vain,” a few important caveats: the project is in its very early stages, so temper the excitement with a little patience.

What We Know About the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days Sequel

According to Variety, which broke the news exclusively, Hudson is on board to produce alongside Stacey Sher, the powerhouse behind films like Erin Brockovich, Pulp Fiction, and Django Unchained, through her Shiny Penny banner. The plan is ambitious but unconfirmed: the studio and filmmakers hope to have Hudson and her original co-star, Matthew McConaughey, reprise their roles as magazine writer Andie and ad executive Benjamin.

For now, though, that remains an intention rather than a done deal. The sequel has no screenwriter attached, no plot details, and no official cast, with the project currently searching for a writer before casting can lock into place. In other words, it is early days, but the wheels are officially turning.

A Refresher on the Original

Released in 2003 and directed by Donald Petrie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was based on the book by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long. The premise was pure rom-com gold: Andie, a magazine columnist, sets out to write a piece on how to drive a man away in 10 days, while Benjamin, a cocky ad executive, makes a bet that he can make any woman fall for him in exactly that time. Naturally, the two become each other’s unwitting targets, and real feelings bloom amid the chaos, a yellow “frost” diamond, and one very iconic butter-yellow gown.

Powered by Hudson and McConaughey’s crackling chemistry and a supporting cast that included Kathryn Hahn, the film earned nearly $180 million worldwide and cemented itself as an essential of the genre.

Part of a Rom-Com Renaissance

The timing is no coincidence. Hollywood is deep in its nostalgia era, and legacy sequels to 2000s favorites are having a serious moment, most notably The Devil Wears Prada 2, which stormed past $690 million globally and proved there is a massive appetite for revisiting beloved characters decades later. Fittingly, both films center on magazine writers, tapping into the same glossy, aspirational world audiences adored the first time around.

Hudson and McConaughey have long kept the door open, with the actress previously noting that the only thing standing between them and a reunion was the right script. Now, with Paramount actively developing one, that dream feels closer than ever. Would you watch Andie and Benjamin take another shot at love?
