In an interview with GQ magazine, the artist explains why his work means so much to him. “I take pride in the fact that there’s a kid who’s living in, you know, Alabama, who never thought something like this was possible for him, almost to the point that he made life and career decisions to find some other thing he was passionate about. But all of a sudden, because I’m here, he knows [he can do it too]. That’s why the Harvard lecture exists. I’m not doing that for myself. I’m doing it to be a beacon of hope for someone. This is the legacy of any artist or creative: you want to make sure that your work makes an impact”, stated Abloh.
In 2019, the “Figures of Speech” exhibit was released. This exhibit included all of the creative pieces by Virgil Abloh, and this was also the last time he was seen in public. The exhibition was two decades full of artwork. Inspired by vintage paintings to even street signs, the artist used all of it to create art. The Fashion Studies Journal explained the exhibit to the following: The work of Virgil Abloh, as exemplified through Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech,“ is the manifestation of postmodernism.
I am indebted to the universe for leading me to Virgil’s “Figure of Speech” exhibit in 2019. It was obvious that his cultural impact far surpassed fashion. I felt his vision synthesize with my own & I knew my journey would be molded by his. Thank you Virgil. Safe travels ❤️ pic.twitter.com/eIf9GpJqDY
