Apink Fans Are No Longer in a ‘Dilemma’ After New Comeback

Apink had disappeared from the K-pop music scene for nearly two years after their last release of “Dumhdurum,” in April of 2020. As a second-generation K-pop group, among others such as 2NE1, Sistar, Wonder Girls, and Girls Generation, Apink has stayed strong all throughout their eleven-year career.

At first, they began with cutesy concepts, and essentially propelled K-pop into a girl group era based on similar themes. However, as the members matured and the industry expanded westward, music took influence from pop ideals, which influenced the famous “comeback trio” that would overthrow their then most listen to the discography: “I’m so sick,” “Eung Eung,” and, finally, “Dumhdurum.” These three releases played a large role in the creation of their most recent comeback, “Dilemma,” the title track of the full album titled Horn, which dropped on February 14. Considering the reactions and overall views that the MV has received since then, it is evident that K-pop fans have not forgotten the legendary group.

From the time of their last releases, a few major changes have happened, too, which impacted the decision-making and formation of the album Horn. Member Na-Eun, arguably the group’s most well-known member, decided to leave the company. However, the group will “continue promoting as a team.” The album was crafted in April of 2021 and was intended to be released at that time before a bullying incident involving Cho-rong arose. Na-Eun was involved in the process of recording the full album and even co-wrote the track “Holy Moly” Despite Na-Eun being unable to participate in this comeback’s promotions, her presence is evident all throughout Horn.

Before delving into what unraveled with “Dilemma,” we must first understand the mechanisms behind their last three comebacks and what made them so extremely popular. Similar to how “Rollin’” revived Brave Girls, who were on the brink of disbandment, “I’m so sick” reinforced the relevancy of Apink and their future contributions to the K-pop scene. All three title tracks are centered around a single synth-pop melody, which immediately draws listeners in as it is the first thing they encounter. The beat stays consistent throughout each song, most often incorporating it as the main element in the chorus.

Apink is one of many pioneers for songs with a similar structure, seeing how groups like STAYC have followed in their footsteps. At the time of each release, however, the songs seemed risky for the group. After all, when an artist that has mastered the technique of cute concepts suddenly turns girl-crush to compete with newer groups, like Twice, there is little hope for success. However, these songs exceeded all expectations and have now become staples in the K-pop world.

It seems as though “Dilemma” was attempting to create a new breakthrough for the group. After having two years of meticulous preparation for the new album, although much of it was probably delayed due to COVID-19, the title track presents itself as a continuation of their previously established sound, which was heavily dependent on synth-pop melodies. It is heavily dependent on underlying EDM beats, which is slightly predictable for current groups as they transition towards more dance-pop styles.

Although “Dilemma” is a very strong track amongst other comebacks of 2022, it falls short compared to their past songs in a few aspects. Unlike the catchy, groovy beat as shown in albums past, this song incorporated less complex layers to add depth to the music. Repeating the phrase “dilemma” in the chorus sounds somewhat off-putting, but it works. While the song emphasizes the girls’ strong vocal abilities, there is a satisfying dance break following the bridge that showcases its masterful instrumental. The beat is catchy and reminiscent of Twice’s “Fancy,” which makes listeners want to jump up and dance. Due to its fundamental EDM nature, the song deserved to be played at a party or in a bustling club. It certainly is a track that is easy to enjoy, and grows on listeners the more they stream.

The rest of the album is pretty similar to each other with more pop-based, upbeat tracks. Although at first, it seemed that Apink would revert to a series of slower, more heart-wrenching tracks, each song brings new flair to the table. “HOLY MOLY,” “My oh My,” and “Free & Love” are generally positive-sounding, dance tracks that are easy on the ears. What stood out more to me were “Nothing” and “Single Rider” which brought new sides of Apink to the forefront. The former was more attitude-driven as if one were flaunting to their ex that they have grown stronger and more independent than before. The trio consisting of Chorong, Eunji, and Namjoo sing about a loss of feelings after a failed relationship, and how they will improve themselves instead—promoting a female empowerment agenda. Additionally, the latter track incorporated an abundance of R&B elements which added to its flow. Of all the b-sides on this album, “Single Rider” stood out the most for its unique beat, which perfectly blended the artists’ vocals with the music without one overpowering the other.

As a veteran group who hasn’t released music in two years, Horn is more than just a revival: it is a symbol to prove that they have yet to back down against fourth-generation groups. Not only are they versatile enough to continue coming out with catchy, revelation music, but their raw talent exceeds those of many newer artists. Watching the group perform on stage is a treat of its own as they add originality and sass to each choreographed movement.

The one question that stands is whether or not Apink will continue on its path of pursuing, and creating, trends in the K-pop industry for years to come. As of right now, the group remains highly popular among fans of all generations, which is hopeful for their future activities. They do not seem to be backing down anytime soon, and as long as Apink stays strong, we can expect many more albums to come.
