On May 3, Meg Ryan took to Instagram to share her latest project: a rom-com comeback. She simply writes, “HERE WE GO!” After seeing this statement, fans are thrilled at such a revival. There is arguably no leading lady as prominent within the rom-com genre as Ryan, having starred in a string of successful romance films throughout her career. Whether it is endearing classics such as When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, or You’ve Got Mail, there are certainly plenty of other hidden gems in Ryan’s film career to choose from.

What Happens Later is based on the play Shooting Star by Steven Dietz, who also co-wrote the screenplay with playwright and novelist Kirk Lynn and Ryan. According to the press release, What Happens Later is described as “ex-lovers Willa (Ryan) and Bill (Duchovny) are reunited for the first time since their split decades prior when they both find themselves snowed in, in-transit, at an airport overnight.” In addition, the film is an attempt at “an evolved and nostalgic take on the romantic comedy.”

Although Ryan is established in the rom-com genre, Duchovny also found himself in a romance film. He starred in the 2000 romance drama, Return to Me, opposite Minnie Driver.

No further plot details for What Happens Later have been divulged yet, but nevertheless, we are excited to see this story brought to life. Meg Ryan and David Duchovny will undoubtedly be an exciting duo. What Happens Later is slated for a 2023 theatrical release.
