Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner is back with new music, and she didn’t disappoint.

The “Kokomo, IN” singer reimagined Brandi Carlile’s “The Story,” a soaring ballad from her sophomore record of the same name. Zauner and her band teamed up with The North Face to create an ad for their “It’s More Than A Jacket” campaign. The minute-and-a-half-long video features stills of parents zipping up their kids’ coats while Zauner’s voice blends in with the sentimental moments. Her rendition contains a gorgeous string arrangement written by Craig Hendrix with violinist Molly Germer and Quartet 121 reuniting with the band to create this stunning piece.

In a press release, the “Be Sweet” singer expressed, “It was a joy to take on the iconic ballad “The Story.” I think the song captures the depths of human tenacity and the spirit of the journey so well. We wanted to keep our rendition sparse and acoustic.”

“The Story” has been covered several times since its 2007 release. Miley Cyrus and Carlile did a duet to the song during Cyrus’ TV special, Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party. In addition, country icon Dolly Parton, who happens to be Cyrus’ godmother, also covered the song. Carlile recently re-recorded her seventh studio albumIn These Silent Days, offering fans an acoustic spin titled In The Canyon Haze.

Apart from Zauner’s gorgeous cover of “The Story,” this is not her first time performing covers in her career. The band has reimagined “Romulus” by Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love,” and Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So.” She also appeared on Ocean ChildSongs of Yoko Ono, performing a tender take on “Nobody Sees Me Like You Do.”

Brandi Carlile’s “The Story” will continue to permeate pop culture. Japanese Breakfast does a terrific job covering such a difficult song. Fans can stream both The Story and Zauner’s Jubilee on all major music platforms.
