Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner is back with new music again. Zauner has become the latest artist to partake in a Live At Electric Lady EP for Spotify. The singer blends tracks from multiple projects in the band’s discography, ranging from newly recorded live Jubilee tracks to a stunning string cover of Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So.”

Michelle Zauner becomes the latest artist to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Patti Smith by releasing an 8-track EP, Live At Electric Lady. Apart from half of the EP’s newly recorded Jubilee tracks (“Tactics”, “Be Sweet,” “Kokomo, IN, and “Savage Good Boy”), the singer’s other four tracks contain a cover and previous projects.

Track 2 on the EP is “Lindsey,” a Little Big League song. LBL had been Zauner’s former band before performing under Japanese Breakfast. For Zauner’s most loyal fans, Zauner writes on Twitter, “There is an LBL song in here for the nerds.” Track 3 is another blast from the past: “Ballad O.” The track, “Ballad O,” can be found off Zauner’s 2020 side project, BUMPER.

Track 4 is “Boyish,” a standout track from Zauner’s second studio album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet. As always, the singer performed the track beautifully.

Arguably the most surprising track on the EP is “Say It Ain’t So,” a cover of Weezer. Zauner is backed by the Quartet 121 string section when performing the hit song. In an interview, Zauner recalls covering “Say It Ain’t So” in college. She reveals, “I played a very sloppy basement cover of ‘Say It Ain’t So’ once with my band in college, so it was fun to revisit it from the opposite angle, stripped down with a string quartet.” Fans were impressed with Zauner’s rendition.

Michelle Zauner reveals that recording at Electric Lady was “the perfect experience.” She adds in the interview, “The longer I’ve worked as a recording artist, the more I’ve realized it’s the simple, stripped-down songs that are the hardest to get right. Having the opportunity to revisit the core catalog of my songwriting in a room with so much history, surrounded by engineers and gear of the highest caliber, it was just a dream come true.” It truly is a dream come true to hear Zauner’s covers and music in multiple different versions.
