Andrew Tate recently lost his appeal to be let out on bail and is set to remain in detention in Romanian prison until April 27.

Trigger warning: this article includes mentions of sexual assault and violence.

Background

Andrew Tate entered mainstream media through an appearance on Big Brother UK. Tate was removed from the series after a video surfaced of him hitting a woman with a belt. Tate claims this video to be false.

In recent years, Tate has become a “self-help influencer for men” where he spews misogynistic content. Tate also claims to make millions through “Hustlers University” where he teaches his life philosophy. He is a cause of concern for many online, as they worry about the impressionable men his words affect.

Tate was banned from Twitter in 2017 for claiming that women are responsible for being sexually assaulted. However, his account was reinstated after Elon Musk took ownership of the site. Throughout his career, Tate has been banned from YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for hateful remarks.

Tate’s Arrest

Tate and his brother, Tristan, were detained in Romania in December, on charges of human trafficking and rape. Romania’s anti-organized crime agency released a statement on the arrest of four suspects, the Tates, and two Romanians. It stated that those involved recruited women and sexually exploited them, subjecting them to “acts of physical violence and mental coercion.” Furthermore, the victims were forced to perform in pornography with the intention of financial gain. The organization identified six victims of the scheme.

The arrest caught a vast amount of public attention, as his arrest appears to be linked to a video he posted on Twitter. Before his arrest, Tate picked a Twitter fight with Greta Thunberg. Thunberg responded, triggering Tate to post a follow-up video. In the video, two pizza boxes branded “Jerry’s Pizza” could be seen. After his arrest, many speculated online that the pizza boxes were Tates demise, alerting officials to his whereabouts.

Recent News

This week, a Romanian court denied the brothers’ appeal to be let out on bail. This is not the first time they have tried and lost their appeals, with numerous unsuccessful attempts occurring throughout their detainment.

The Tate brothers are set to remain in prison until the end of April. However, prosecutors have petitioned the court to extend their time in custody successfully several times. According to Romanian law, they may be held in detention for up to 180 days.

Update: on March 31 Tate and the three others arrested alongside him won their appeal. They have been placed on house arrest in Romanian until April 29.
