Sofia Vergara Is Griselda Blanco in New Netflix Series
She’s making a striking return. Sofia Vergara is boldly departing from her comedic repertoire to embody the formidable Griselda Blanco in the forthcoming Netflix series Griselda.
Revered as Colombia’s “Cocaine Godmother” and “Black Widow,” Blanco was a Colombian drug lord who skillfully navigated a dual existence as both a devoted mother and a ruthless mob boss. Her ability to perpetrate heinous crimes spanned the 1970s through the early 2000s.
In 2020, before the conclusion of the beloved series Modern Family, Sofia Vergara expressed her keen interest in taking on the role of Griselda, a character of significant intrigue, to Eric Newman, the mastermind behind the hit series Narcos.
“She had collected tons of images and stories and people who knew [Griselda Blanco],” Newman told EW. “And she had really gone deep on someone who felt the pressure that she felt. I think that she really understood what it was like. She’s got a son, and she came to this country as a young mother with not much of a plan.”
Director Andrés Baiz noticed Vergara’s desire to test her dramatic skills. “This was a chance to reinvent herself and step out of her comfort zone, which was very brave of her,” the Narcos director tells EW. “She knew she had to dive in completely into this role and feel insecure and afraid, but she knew that all she had was her work, that she had to push herself to the limit.”
Baiz would meet with her many times to expand on Vergara’s character. “She wanted a Griselda that didn’t feel like Sofía Vergara,” he announced. “So, for example, she had to learn how to smoke. Sofía had never smoked in her life… We came up with a bunch of questions. What are Griselda’s dreams? What does she think about at night? What drives her? What car does she drive? What cigarettes does she smoke? What is her favorite food? Where does she want to go on vacation again? How does she move? Does she like to dance or not?”
Numerous films have delved into the lives of notorious drug lords such as Pablo Escobar, George Jung, Frank Lucas, Demetrius Flenory, and Nicky Barnes. Nevertheless, fans are eagerly anticipating a fresh perspective in the form of a new documentary, this time focusing on the narrative from a woman’s point of view.
Me too. I'm excited for this underworld movie told from a woman's perspective.
