On May 15, Universal Pictures unveiled the official trailer for Jon M. Chu’s Wicked. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film adapts the iconic Broadway story of Elphaba and Glinda for the big screen.

The trailer starts with Elphaba’s shocking arrival at Shiz University. Viewers get a glimpse of Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero as they are introduced to the magical setting.

Madame Morrible, portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, assigns Glinda and Elphaba as roommates and their unlikely journey to friendship begins. Grande’s rendition of “Popular” is heard in the background as the pair hilariously argue over space.

As they settle into their studies, Elphaba begins to discover her powers. The headmistress takes an interest in the talented student, much to Glinda’s dismay. “You’re the one the wizard has been waiting for,” Morrible tells her.

Glinda then invites Elphaba out with her, giving her an ugly hat about which she previously described, “I’d give it away, but I don’t hate anyone that much.” To her surprise, Elphaba puts on the hat as the “Defying Gravity” lyric, “Something has changed within me,” plays.

As her peers laugh at her, Fiyero astonishedly comments, “She doesn’t give a twig what anyone thinks about her.” Glinda argues back, “Of course she does. She just pretends not to.” Changed by the moment, the good witch embraces her peer.

Next, Elphaba receives a balloon from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz inviting her to The Emerald City. As she departs on a gorgeous green train, she requests for her new friend to come with her. The duo arrive in the breathtaking new city and meet Oz, The Great and Terrible, controlled behind a curtain by Jeff Goldblum.

Elphaba catches on to a darker plot taking place. As Glinda stunningly floats across the screen in a pink bubble, the wizard forewarns, “The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy.”

In a Frankenstein-esque montage, viewers see Elphaba turned into a monster. Posters display a villainous caricature of her face and mobs burn statues of her likeness.

As the world turns against her, Elphaba must make her escape. Glinda comforts her: “Don’t be afraid.” She replies, “I’m not afraid. It’s the wizard who should be afraid of me.”

Along with the trailer’s release, the film launched its Shiz University website, where fans can sign up for updates. Yeoh introduces the fun promotion as Madame Morrible in a new video, urging students to submit their applications.

Wicked premieres November 27. Until its release, readers can view the trailer below.
