Pop Duo Magdalena Bay to Release New Album Imaginal Disc
Magdalena Bay announced they plan to release their new album, Imaginal Disc, on August 23. The pop duo simultaneously released a characteristically surreal music video to accompany one of their two new singles, “Image.” With all this new content and countless tour dates on the horizon, we can’t wait to see what they will do next.
Magdalena Bay, comprised of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, is unlike any other band on the current pop scene. Tenenbaum and Lewin have been making music together since they were a couple of teenagers in Miami, where they formed a soft-rock band called Tabula Rasa, Pitchfork reported. After going their separate ways to attend college, the duo reconnected and soon began releasing music with an entirely new feel.
The tracklist for Imaginal Disc was revealed on July 16. With fifteen tracks, it promises to deliver the otherworldly pop fans have come to expect.

The synth-packed dance beats, sustained by Tenenbaum’s ethereal vocals, are simultaneously retro and futuristic. The surreal imagery and lyrics add to the impression that Magdalena Bay eludes the limits of time and space, contributing to comparisons to Grimes. Their latest music video, “Image,” is a perfect example of the group’s unique aesthetics.
The effect is cute and creepy, featuring wacky dance moves, hyper-online animation, and periwinkle makeup. The dizzying visuals don’t stop there. In addition to listing their many tour dates, Magdalena Bay’s website features a map section designed by lead singer Tenenbaum. The pixelated, gif-laden map offers plenty to explore, occupying the space between video games and interactive art.
The intriguing and haunting visuals helped the duo find their niche. Their online presence is as prolific as it is consistent, as their TikTok bio states, “synthpop straight from the simulation.” We can’t help but feel refreshed by the talented group’s fun take on pop.
Imaginal Disc is available to presave on all streaming platforms. August 23 is a big day for music enthusiasts, as that’s also when Irish rockers Fontaines D.C. plan to release Romance.
