Viola Davis to Be Honored With Cecil B. DeMille Award
EGOT winner Viola Davis has been announced as the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which will be presented at the 2025 Golden Globes.
Viola Davis continues to make history. As both an EGOT Winner and the most nominated Black actress in Oscars history, the 59-year-old Color Purple star will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Known for her outstanding work across film, television, and theater, Davis has earned an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and two Tony Awards. Among her many accolades, she won the 2017 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for her role in Fences.
“Viola Davis is a luminary whose profound talent has continuously shifted the lens through which we see and understand film,” detailed Golden Globes president, Helen Hoehne. “Presenting her with the 2025 Cecil B. DeMille Award is not only an honor but a reflection of our admiration for her relentless dedication to her craft and her monumental impact on the industry. Viola’s courage in portraying complex, powerful characters has broken barriers and paved new paths, making her an emblem of excellence and an ideal recipient of this prestigious award.”
The Cecil B. DeMille Award, introduced in 1952, honors individuals with “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Named after legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, a founder of the Hollywood motion-picture industry and one of its most successful producer-directors, the award celebrates trailblazers who have shaped the world of entertainment.
As of 2023, 69 artists have received this accolade, making Viola Davis the seventieth honoree. Previous recipients include legends such as Eddie Murphy, Jane Fonda, Tom Hanks, Jeff Bridges, and Oprah Winfrey.
For the first time in Golden Globes history, the award will be presented during a gala dinner on January 3, 2025. Viola Davis will be celebrated alongside the 2025 Carol Burnett Award recipient, yet to be announced, at the iconic Beverly Hilton Hotel. While the full list of Golden Globe nominations has yet to be revealed, anticipation is already building for the star-studded event.
The 2025 Golden Globes will air live on January 5, 2025, at 8 PM: EST on the CBS Television Network and will also stream on Paramount+. With a runtime of approximately three hours, it promises to be an unforgettable evening honoring the best in entertainment.
