Gomez will portray María, a closeted Chicana who sets out on a mission to bring her grandmother, with progressing Alzheimer’s, to her hometown in Mexico. Meanwhile, Perroni will portray María’s perfectionist mother, Celestina, who disapproves of her daughter’s plan.

The film is stated to be a love letter to abuelos, portraying older characters as three-dimensional and not only there to serve as advice givers to the young protagonist. No Te Olvides will center on underrepresented communities, even within cinema focusing on the Latine community in the U.S., such as queer love and the older generation.

The upcoming musical film is set to portray the family experience, despite the divisions between generations, young and old, and culture, such as first and second generation, that many Latines in the diaspora know too well.

The screenplay, written by Nerris Nevarez-Nassiri, was recognized as one of the best submissions to the Austin Film Festival’s screenwriting competition. The film was also selected for The Black List’s Musical Fellowship.

The Black List praised the script, stating, “Its celebration of Mexican culture, growing old, and never allowing age to get in the way of the pursuit of happiness is deeply rewarding to read.”

While No Te Olvides will be her musical cinema debut, audiences already know Gomez can feel the beat, having won her Dancing with the Stars season in 2023.

The Mexican-American actress is well-known for her work in the 2022 Marvel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, debuting the character of America Chavez from the comics to the silver screen. Since then, she has also been set to star in the upcoming films Ursa Major and The Cat in the Hat.

Although the actress might be newer to the musical world, Perroni certainly is not, having starred in one of the most iconic telenovelas, Rebelde, which led to her two Latin Grammy nominations as part of the band RBD.

After her Rebelde days, Perroni has starred in various films and television series, including for streaming giants such as Netflix’s Triptych and Amazon Prime’s The Game of Keys

The pair will begin working together soon, with No Te Olvides beginning to film this fall, as per Deadline’s announcement.
