Merit or Quota: Does It Really Matter?

A former Texas official questions senior high school students’ admissions to colleges.

Former Texas Education official George Clayton is coming under fire for responses to high school student’s college acceptance posts. This was first seen with biracial senior Drake Johnson who tweeted his excitement as he was accepted to Harvard University. While there were many congratulatory posts, Clayton’s response stood out as he asked if Johnson got in under merit or quota. Many could have responded harshly but Johnson responded by naming his credentials that led him to the acceptance.

Clayton seems to have tweeted a similar question in response to many other college students who seemed biracial or of another minority as they posted their own college admissions. But, does it really matter if a student is accepted based on quota or merit? This is a stressful time during a high school senior student’s life and having them wonder if their dream school accepted because of their skin or credentials is not something they want on their mind.
