What’s Going On?

The plot of the reboot picks up right where the loyal viewers left off. According to Deadline, “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl… The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.”

This reboot will have ten one-hour episodes that tackle the modern-day highs and lows of New York City’s elite. Furthermore, viewers will get a fresh perspective as the world of social media has dramatically changed since the original series finale.

Who’s Who?

We can’t talk about the on-screen stars without mentioning the people behind the scenes. Original Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will return as executive producers. Joshua Safran, writer and executive producer of the original series, will also contribute to the reboot.

Regarding any of the original actors participating in the reboot, it’s up in the air. According to executive producer Josh Schwartz, “We’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening, and we’d love for them to be involved if they want to be involved, but certainly didn’t want to make it contingent upon [them being involved].”

Chace Crawford, who played Nate Archibald in the original series, spoke to Entertainment Tonight in 2019, stating, “I think they’d have to come up with a real plan, and I know Josh and Stephanie would have to be a part of it. It is funny to me, it’s almost become a classic now. It probably goes to show you that we shouldn’t be redoing it. I can’t be in high school anymore. That’s the thing. I don’t even know what they would do. For me personally, I would love to see everybody again and I loved everybody and I would love to work with everybody, but I don’t know if it’s necessarily a reality.”

Blake Lively who played Serena Van der Woodsen also weighed in on her potential return. Lively told Variety, “Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much. But I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows—if it was good if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”

One person we can count on returning is the voice of Gossip Girl herself, Kristen Bell. Although she told E News! That her return is a secret that she’ll never tell, in November 2019 she officially signed on to do the reboot.

The Newest Elites

With only weeks until the reboot takes over our screens, we can finally reveal the newest crop of elites. Whitney Peak will play Zoya Loft, our ticket to the world of Manhattan’s elite. Emily Alyn Lind as Audrey Hope, the wealthy daughter of an athleisure wear designer. Julian Calloway, Audrey’s BFF, will be played by Jordan Alexander. Thomas Doherty will play Maximus “Max” Wolfe, a luxury and party enthused playboy who is openly pansexual. Savannah Smith will be fashionista Monet de Haan. Eli Brown is Otto “Obie” Bergmann IV, a wealthy person that divulges himself in good deeds. Another style enthusiast, Luna La, will be portrayed by Zión Moreno. Tavi Gevinson as Kate Keller, who is one of the most ambitious of the teens. Last but not least, Evan Mock will play Akeno “Aki” Menzies, a character more on the innocent side.

Although there is no official release date, the Gossip Girl reboot will premiere in July 2021 on HBO Max.
