We have nothing but Respect for Jennifer Hudson as she prepares to portray Aretha Franklin in the powerful biopic, which will release on August 13. Respect follows Aretha Franklin’s rise to stardom, including her early childhood and Civil Rights activism. The Queen of Soul may have started her singing career in her father’s church choir, but over time, she became known everywhere. It’s a remarkable true story, made that much more moving by Hudson’s depiction of the “A Natural Woman” singer.

The stakes are high for Hudson and the movie. Franklin hand-picked the former American Idol winner to play her in the biopic before her passing in 2017.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” Hudson stated on the BET red carpet in June. “But that’s woman empowerment… if she passed the torch, if she said Jennifer you could do it… it gave me the strength and encouragement to try.”

The production of Respect has been in development for some time now. As a result, fans are anxiously awaiting its release in a few weeks. An artist in Detroit even painted a mural of Franklin using Hudson’s image.

Along with Hudson, Respect has a star-studded cast. Joining her are Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans (Requiem for a Dream), Marc Maron (Joker), Mary J. Blige, and more.
