Red Velvet Personifies Regal Whimsy Ahead of New Album ‘Queendom’

SM girl group Red Velvet is gifting fans on their birthday this year, celebrating their seventh anniversary with teasers for the new mini-album Queendom.

The third generation quintuplet has been on hiatus a year and a half, their last release being the 2019 LP The Reve Festival: Finale. The artists could not proceed with promotions for the LP’s title track “Psycho,” as lead vocalist Wendy sustained a life-altering injury before their performance at the SBS Gayo Daejun special.

Fully recovered and better than ever, the singer has offered some stellar visuals ahead of this month’s comeback.

On August 2, the band’s Twitter dropped the comeback schedule, including planned dates for concept photos, the title track music video, and the album release.

The mood sampler showed the girl group amongst a blue, out-of-this-world landscape. Red Velvet takes dreamy to a whole new level in the preview with a school of fish out of water, the artists appearing as giants gallivanting around town, and hot air balloons surrounding the city they tower over. Despite their hiatus, it seems the group is still pioneering dreamlike concepts.

The first round of concept photos also shows members Seulgi and Joy in a pink-themed bedroom surrounded by cereal boxes and teen magazines.

Seulgi’s new look has turned heads for many fans, as she has brought back the orange statement hair dye from the group’s legendary Russian Roulette era.

While Red Velvet fans enjoyed the members’ solo and subunit projects during the group hiatus, nothing hits the same as the energy they bring as a quintuplet.

Queendom will be available on all streaming platforms on August 16 at 6 PM KST. Until then, follow Red Velvet on Instagram and Twitter for any new content leading up to the anniversary project.
