The Wicked movie has been long-awaited by audiences since the Broadway musical gained great popularity in the early 2000s, and it had finally been ready to fly in March 2022. The production has now been pushed back to June 2022, as the film will now be one of the first projects to take place at Universal’s newly built Sky Studios in the United Kingdom.

John M. Chu (In the Heights) is set to direct the film, while producers David Stone and Marc Platt are heading into the project at full steam despite the fact that it is not technically greenlit yet. The plot will follow the same storyline as the musical, being a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Fans can be sure to hear the original music by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman—including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.”

A cast has not yet been released for the adaptation, but fans are speculating which stars could do justice the iconic roles.

Despite the disappointment of the delay, the promise of the Wicked movie coming to fruition at Universal’s newest studio leaves plenty to look forward to. Until then, audiences will simply have to continue “Dancing Through Life.”
