‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Renewed for Season 19 at ABC
Calling all Grey’s Anatomy fans. ABC’s hit medical drama has been renewed for season 19, with Ellen Pompeo reprising her role as the titular general surgeon Meredith Grey.
Shonda Rhimes created the long-running medical drama in 2005. Grey’s follows the lives of Grey and her fellow surgical interns as they navigate their medical careers and love lives.

The show has a complicated history, both on and off-screen. The show parted with many beloved characters, including whip-smart cardiothoracic surgeon Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh, and dreamy neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey.

Grey’s features characters having many different dynamics, with cardio chief Preston Burke and his right-hand man, intern George O’Malley, becoming an early duo in the show’s run. In 2007, Burke’s Isaiah Washington was fired after using a slur, reportedly against his co-star, O’Malley’s T.R. Knight.

Katherine Heigl, who played kind-hearted resident Izzie Stevens until her departure in 2010, criticized Washington’s statement where he repeated the slur, stating, “I’m sorry, that did not need to be said, I’m not okay with it.” Heigl and Knight were close offscreen and played best friends on the show.
Before the show’s renewal, Pompeo had cast doubt on her return to the titular role, stating, “I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end.” While her reasoning behind a possible exit was due to the hearty longevity of the show, not everyone on the cast had similar reasons for leaving.
