Amy Wang will replace Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim as the writer for the upcoming sequel to Crazy Rich Asians after a dispute regarding Lim’s lower pay for the original Crazy Rich Asians in 2018.

Kevin Kwan’s book trilogy includes Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend, and Rich People Problems. Fans of the book series and first film anticipate the sequel to the 2018 smash-hit movie. Nearly four years after the film’s release, Henry Golding spoke of the behind-the-scenes holdups, “I always bug [Jon M. Chu, the director of Crazy Rich Asians] about it and he tells him the same thing every time: They’re trying to figure out the writing. I know they’re working on it, but hopefully sooner than later.”

Crazy Rich Asians explores the relationship between economics professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and her boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), as she meets his wealthy family in Singapore. The financial and familial dynamics that emerge during his best friend’s wedding festivities create tension in their happy union. The film stars Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Gemma Chan.

Lim, who was set to write the two sequels, left after it was revealed she was being paid ten times less than co-writer Chiarelli. Chu spoke in support of Lim’s decision. He stated his pride “that she was able to stand up for her own measure of worth and walk away when she felt like she was being undervalued. I have experienced this several times in my years of making movies trying to keep a creative team together on budgets big and small.”

Golding and Wu will return to star in Crazy Rich Asians 2. Plot details are currently being concealed, with plans for a third film also in the works.
