Anthony Ramos Releases ‘Wasn’t Even Lookin’ as His New Musical Era Takes Shape
Anthony Ramos wasn’t looking for love, but it looks like love had other plans. Ramos just released his latest single, “Wasn’t Even Lookin’,” blending English-language storytelling with Latin rhythms for a flirtatious, infectious track.
“I wasn’t even lookin’ / Wasn’t trying to fall,” he sings, setting the scene for a romance that caught him completely off guard. He opens the song as someone who has been perfectly content on his own, keeping love at arm’s length and his situations on ice. Then she walks in and, well, never mind.
Ramos’ lyrics keep the story playful, comparing his mystery woman to a “smooth criminal” who has him ready to plead guilty. “You ain’t loud, but you shine different / Calm, but you shake the room,” he sings. One look was all it took to send his carefully iced-out love life into a tailspin.
With legendary salsa producer Sergio George behind the track, “Wasn’t Even Lookin’” builds to its climactic musical moment, with “Montuno!” shout-outs and “Me encontraste,” or “You found me,” sung in Spanish. The repeated phrase is at the heart of the song’s emotion: “He wasn’t even lookin,’ but you found me anyway.”
The accompanying music video carries that same energy, blending salsa with Lindy Hop for a visual that feels just as playful as the song itself.
“Wasn’t Even Lookin’” marks the second release in Ramos’ new musical era, following “New York City,” a heartfelt love letter to the place that helped shape him. Released ahead of the New York Knicks’ championship win and the Puerto Rican Day Parade, the track felt especially fitting for the Brooklyn native and proud Puerto Rican artist, celebrating the city through the lens of someone who knows its energy firsthand.
Now, Ramos is shifting from a love letter to the city to a love story of his own. While “New York City” captured his connection to home, “Wasn’t Even Lookin’” finds him caught off guard by a connection he never saw coming. Together, the two tracks offer an early glimpse at a new chapter for Ramos, one where his New York perspective and Puerto Rican roots continue to shape the sound.
