Spirited is a musical retelling of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. As the well-known story goes, Scrooge is an ill-tempered man who hates Christmas. On the night of Christmas Eve, he is visited by three spirits, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Through these visits, Scrooge confronts all the obstacles he has faced that have made him the way he is, and in the end, the grumpy Scrooge becomes a sweet-hearted Christmas lover.

In the upcoming film, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) has to select a Scrooge that can best benefit from a visit from these three different Christmas spirits. Unfortunately, this time, he picks the wrong Scrooge, Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds). Throughout the journey, Briggs flips the switch on the Ghost of Christmas Present, making him reexamine his own past, present, and future.

This isn’t Ferrell’s or Reynolds’ first time getting into the Christmas spirit. The beloved holiday classic Elf stars Will Ferrell whose character is a human raised by elves. We watch as he embarks on a journey to find his dad and winds up saving Christmas. Likewise, Ryan Reynolds starred in the hit holiday rom-com Just Friends. After confessing his feelings to the woman, he loves, she tells him she wants to be “just friends.” Ten years later, he returns to his hometown for the holidays, determined to win the heart of his lifelong crush.

To announce the film, Reynolds took to Twitter to post the trailer, his tweet read, “Happy Birthday, Hugh. This year, I’m giving you the gift of being much worse than you at singing and dancing. But at least there’s Will and Octavia!” This a reference to the recently announced news that Hugh Jackman will be reprising his role as Wolverine, alongside Renyolds, in the upcoming Marvel movie Deadpool 3.

Reynolds had previously shared behind-the-scenes photos from set on his Instagram. He captioned the post, “That’s a wrap for me on Spirited. Not sure I’d have been ready to say yes to a film this challenging even three years ago. Singing, dancing, and playing in the sandbox with Will Ferrell made a whole lotta dreams come true.”

Apple TV+ released a statement announcing the film, “For the first time, A Christmas Carol is told from the perspective of the ghosts in this hilarious musical twist on the classic Dickens tale.” The music for the film is written and composed by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The pair are not new to the world of musicals, as they are best known for their Oscar award-winning work on La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen.

As if this film couldn’t get any better, the star-studded cast also includes Octavia Spencer (The Help), Sunita Mani (Glow), Patrick Page (In the Heights), Joe Tippett (Rise), Marlow Barkley (Single Parents), and Jen Tullock (Before You Know It). Spirited has all the elements needed to make up the perfect holiday film, and we couldn’t be more excited to see this timeless tale comedically retold through song and dance.

Get ready to grab your tap shoes and sing along, as Spirited will be released in theaters on November 11 and will be available to stream exclusively on Apple TV+ on November 18. You can get in the holiday spirit now by watching the trailer below.
