Based on the novel of the same name, The Wonder, follows English nurse Lib Wright, venturing into the 1860s Irish countryside. Wright, played by Florence Pugh, is sent to a small village to observe a young girl, Anna O’Donnell, who has not eaten in four months. Anna is played by Kíla Lord Cassidy. Accompanied by a nun, she is tasked with watching the girl for two weeks, then reporting her findings. The villagers believe the girl is a miracle, so her declining health does not concern them much. Wright, however, wants to help the girl and quickly realizes she must do it alone.

The Wonder was shot last year in Ireland. Pugh voiced her praise for the country hosting the filming locations on her Instagram. She stated in her post, “Thank you to all those who helped us while we were there. Fans who waited and cheered. The locals who let us turn their quiet village into our 1860s film set. We appreciated your support hugely.”

In addition, the Black Widow actress praised Ireland during an interview with Netflix UK. She joked in the interview, “it’s very hard to have a bad day when you’re like hanging out with beautiful Irish people.”

In September, The Wonder premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. Pugh has had relatively back-to-back premieres recently. Don’t Worry Darling, which she starred in with Harry Styles, premiered on September 23, and The Wonder debuted at the festival three weeks earlier.

Both films did not release on streaming services until this month. Don’t Worry Darling, made its way to HBO Max on November 8, and The Wonder hit Netflix on November 4 in the UK, but on November 16 in the US.

Although the press for Don’t Worry Darling was overwhelming because of its star-studded cast and anticipated release, Pugh’s fans did not let The Wonder go unnoticed. Fans have been active on social media supporting the film since its release, some even combining posts with support for Don’t Worry Darling.
