Nothing is scarier than asking for your future father-in-law’s blessing, much less in Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. Jonah Hill stars as the nerve-wrecked son-in-law trying to impress his girlfriend’s father, Eddie Murphy. As soon as Murphy pops the question “So you want to marry my daughter?” Hill answers genuinely that he does. Then Murphy bluntly asks “So do you hang out in the hood all the time, or do you just come up here for our food and women?” leaving Hill speechless.

As the conversation continues Hill’s words take a downward spiral as soon as he states “Mixed race people are really awesome.” Clearly, Jonah Hill’s character is out of his element as he tries to relate to Black culture a little too hard.

Directed by Kenya Barris (Entergalactic), the film follows a new couple introducing their relationship to their families. As a result, cultures and family dynamics clash revealing generational differences and an examination of modern love.

You People showcases a classic meet cute. Ezra Cohen (Jonah Hill) meets Amira Mohammed (Lauren London) accidentally in her car, believing Amira is his rideshare. Despite being in shock, Amira and Ezra develop a bond over their love of music and sneakers. Thus, they fall for each other so hard that they believe it is time to merge their families together. In other words, they are ready to get hitched. However, they soon realize their families are more different than they think.

Ezra’s family are progressive Jewish parents which contrasts Amira’s strict Muslim parents. Chaos ensues as their families are torn by their differences and constantly interfere with the couple’s life.

Barris has come through with many films depicting the Black experience. He has created television series such as Mixed-ish, Black-ish, and now a vibrantly rendered animated film, Entergalactic. In his upcoming film, You People, Barris collaborates with Jonah Hill to write the movie’s script and develop a comedic but subversive story about families overcoming their differences.

The film features Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Lauren London (Without Remorse), Sam Jay (Bust Down), Nia Long (The Best Man), and many more talented actors.

You People will be available to stream on Netflix this January 27, 2023. Fans are sure to be excited to watch a twist of the meet the parents trope. Watch the hilarious trailer for the buddy comedy film down below.
