Directed by Taika Waititi, Next Goal Wins is part sports film and part heartwarming story. This film’s basis is the 2014 documentary of the same name. It is an underdog story that will see one team from American Samoa try to make its way to the top. This film has been developing for many years but will soon see the light. The film will premiere on November 16 in theaters only and inspire audiences everywhere.

The film centers around Dutch-American coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender). Rongen’s task is to help out the American Samoan soccer team, which is considered to be one of the worst teams in the world, having once lost a game 31 to nothing. Their goal is to qualify for the 2014 FIFA world cup.

Getting this team on track will take a lot of determination, grit, and energy. This film will display the real-life story of working and playing hard.

The trailer for the film came out on April 26, beginning with one of ABBA’s iconic songs “Take a Chance On Me,” setting the lighthearted tone for the movie.

The trailer makes it clear that this film is a comedy. Watiti also pokes fun at himself by pointing out his losses, stating that the loser of an Oscar and the loser of a Teen Choice Award directed the film. The American Samoan team does not seem to have a great understanding of the game, and they just want to score one goal. The trailer sees Rongen warm up to the team, and even if they do not win, everyone will have a great time.

Two weeks before the trailer, the poster for the film came out. With a backdrop of beautiful Samoan mountains, there is a colorful bus that is carrying the whole team. Even though it is from a bit of a distance, everyone on the bus looks excited.

The film’s tagline, “Be Happy,” is in the middle of the big sky, separate from the rest of the action, demonstrating the film’s uplifting message.

As a director, Waititi has had a lot of success. His big break was in What We Do In The Shadows, which has become a cult classic and has since become a popular tv series. Waititi has also directed multiple Thor films, such as Thor: Ragnorak and then Thor: Love and Thunder. He has had praise for bringing comedic elements into those films.

In addition, in 2020, his movie Jojo Rabbit got a nomination for Best Picture, and he won for Best Adapted Screenplay. In television, Waititi has had a lot of acclaim for his recent series Our Flag Means Death. He has a decent track record, which is promising for Next Goal Wins.

The project’s first announcement came in August 2019. Fassbender signed on in September, and filming began in December in Hawaii. After that, there was a long development, which the pandemic did not help. There also had to be some reshoots, as Armie Hammer was originally in this film, and he had to drop out due to the sexual assault accusations.

The film was originally set to premiere in April 2023, but then the release date switched to September.

With the recent success of Ted Lasso, people seem to love heartwarming comedies about soccer, or football, as others may call it. From the looks of the trailer, Next Goal Wins will deliver on that. Fans can watch the trailer down below.
