Netflix just announced the return of their hit political drama, The Diplomat, for a highly anticipated second season, and fans can’t wait.

The Diplomat follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) in her position as the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. The first season found Wyler amidst war and turmoil, forcing her to use her excellent crisis management to diffuse international conflict and build strategic alliances. As she adjusted to her new high-stakes role, The Diplomat also followed Wyler’s personal life as she attempts to survive her marriage to diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). 

With a supporting cast that includes David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh, season one of The Diplomat had everyone talking. In fact, when the series premiered on Netflix on April 20, it quickly rose to number one on the streaming services’ Top 10 TV English list. Furthermore, The Diplomat appeared on Netflix’s Top 10 list in 86 other countries garnering 57.48 million hours of viewership within its first weekend.

Following its debut, The Diplomat received acclaim for its thrilling, high-stakes nature that kept audiences on the edge of their seat while also touching on relevant subjects such as long-term relationships between countries and people.

On the renewal news, the series creator and executive producer, Debora Cahn, stated, “We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it. We’re so glad we get to do it again!”

The Diplomat star and fellow executive producer, Keri Russel, also expressed her joy in regards to the news, declaring, “I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you Netflix for giving us another shot.”

Fans are already rejoicing over the news, especially following the explosive ending to season one that had viewers desperate for answers.

While further information on the second season has yet to be released, Netflix is placing a great deal of trust in the series’ cast and crew following its breakout debut. The Vice President of Drama Series at Netflix, Jinny Howe, expressed excitement for The Diplomat’s continuation, sharing, “After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2.”

With the full first season available on Netflix, there is plenty of time for those who haven’t seen The Diplomat to catch up on what they’ve missed. For those who already have seen season one, a rewatch may be in order in light of this sensational news.
