Over twenty years ago, Nia Vardalos highlighted her personal experiences of growing up Greek and marrying a non-Greek man (John Corbett). The film spoke to many people and became one of the most profitable films ever. Seven years ago, she brought the cast back for a new Greek story. Now, a third film is coming to audiences on September 8. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will be slightly different from the other films in the franchise and it may have fewer weddings. There seems to be some traveling, and the trailer promises a wild ride.

The trailer came out on May 11 and explains that since the events of the first film Toula’s (Vardalos) father, Gus, has passed away. To honor Gus’s memory, the whole family is going to visit his childhood village in Greece. After packing montages and airplane hijinks, the family lands in their original home. Toula is looking to find her father’s old friends for the reunion, however, that turns out to be a challenge. Other challenges include everyone sharing a room, wild animals disturbing them, and more.

The trailer also promises some big parties and lively dancing. Of course, those are basic expectations for this franchise. There may also be some new love on the horizon. Toula’s daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris), who audiences met in the second film, is connecting with a new boy, Aristotle (Elia Kacavas). The rest of Toula’s relatives are all seen having a blast and bonding with each other. This third film in the franchise is certainly putting the Greek in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

The original film is from Vardalos’s one-woman play, which gained popularity quickly. When Tom Hanks saw her performance, he decided to adapt it into a movie. The romantic comedy amused audiences from all backgrounds. Greek culture was not seen much in film before, so this paved the way for representation. The mass praise created huge box office earnings and appeal for the sequel. There was also enough enjoyment for a third film to get the green light. While the early 2000s fun romantic comedies have faded, this franchise still thrives in the genre.

The announcement that the third film was in development came in April 2021. While the pandemic delayed the original production of this film, everyone was quickly back on track with Vardalos reportedly finishing the script in October 2021. Filming began in May 2022 in Greece and ended in August. Not only is this the first film in the franchise actually in Greece, this film will also be the first film of the franchise that Vardalos is directing.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will be the first film in the franchise without one of the major cast members. In the first two films, Michael Constantine embodied Toula’s loving and memorable father. However, Constantine passed away on August 31, 2021, at 94, from natural causes. While this film is about mourning his character, cast members are also mourning the actor. Development for this film began before Constantine’s death, but it is not clear if a film about his death was always the plan. Nevertheless, this film is in dedication to and will honor his legacy.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 looks like it will be an exciting adventure comedy mixed with some feelings of grief. While it may not be the type of film that will win awards, the new trailer sees that easy entertainment can often be enjoyable and relaxing.
