Grammy-winning R&B singer SZA revealed in an interview that her ex-fiancé used to pay for almost everything and be the breadwinner in the relationship. Now the star is on to winning, being nominated for Grammys, and being known as one of the most recognizable artists this year.

While in a relationship with her ex, SZA still played around with her passions and what she wanted to pursue as a career. Born and raised in New Jersey, she dropped out of college only one semester away from graduation and instead took on bartending to help pay rent. Her ex, being a part of the design industry and eight years older than her, managed nearly all their finances. Over time, SZA became irritated with the codependency. That’s when she came across her talent for songwriting and vocals.

The artist mentions she still wants to continue making music and is “always proving a point.” She has broken the music boundaries by smoothly blending the alternative, hip-hop, and R&B genres. This creation of music specifically attracts the younger generations of music lovers. SZA started on Tumblr and instantly grew a fanbase, leading to the popularization of the alternative scene.

SZA’s most recent album, SOS, released in December 2022, secured nine Grammy nominations for the 2024 awards season. The cover of the album is an imitation of an image of the late Princess Diana of Wales while vacationing. Artists featured on the album include Phoebe Bridgers, Travis Scott, and Don Toliver. The most popular song on the album, “Kill Bill,” debuted on TikTok throughout the year and provoked the creation of multiple trends.

Fans found her answers to the interview questions invigorating as she expressed her challenges while overcoming codependency and how she channels those experiences into her writing.

SZA will hopefully release her new album, LANA, soon, as the exact release date is still a mystery to her fans. It is also expected to contain seven to ten tracks. For now, you can stream SOS on all music-sharing platforms.
