‘Black Panther 3’ Reveals Bold New Hero David Jonsson
Black Panther 3 has found the heir to Wakanda’s throne, and Marvel unveiled him to a roaring Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. British actor David Jonsson, 32, will step into the vibranium suit as Prince T’Challa II, the adult son of the beloved T’Challa, in a coming-of-age story that carries one of Marvel’s most cherished franchises into its next generation. The reveal, made at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel on July 25, answers a question fans have held close since the final moments of 2022’s Wakanda Forever, when Nakia introduced the young son she had been quietly raising in Haiti. “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson stated from the stage as sections of the crowd broke into Wakanda chants.
What Black Panther 3 Will Be About
The film follows Prince T’Challa II as he comes of age and accepts the mantle his father once carried, a passing of the torch rather than a recasting of it. Ryan Coogler, who wrote and directed both Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the 2018 original, returns to steer this next chapter, fresh off the runaway success of his 2025 vampire epic Sinners. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Empire that Coogler had quietly found his star months earlier, meeting Jonsson in secret before he was ready to share the news, so certain was the director that he had discovered the right man for the role.
Who Is Joining the Cast?
Jonsson arrives as one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising talents, with recent turns in Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, and two seasons of Industry. He steps into a world of familiar faces, with Letitia Wright reprising Shuri and Winston Duke returning as M’Baku. The franchise is also welcoming a titan, as Denzel Washington is set to join after Coogler wrote a role expressly for him. “Denzel is family at this point,” the director shared on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, adding that he considers Washington the greatest living actor and has wanted to work with him since the very beginning.
When Does the Movie Come Out?
Shot gloriously on 70mm, Black Panther 3 will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028, following next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Fans eager to return to the kingdom sooner can stream Eyes of Wakanda, the animated anthology that debuted on Disney+ in 2025. The first two films turned Wakanda into a global celebration of Black excellence and African culture, and this next installment inherits that legacy with real care. Chadwick Boseman, who originated T’Challa and died in 2020 at just 43, gave Wakanda its heart, and as a new hero lifts the mantle, the kingdom he helped build marches proudly on.
