Author Rick Riordan took to Twitter to confirm that the Walt Disney Company had begun the casting process for the Percy Jackson live-action series based on Riordan’s best-selling novels. The casting announcement confirmed the series was still in the early stages and that the series had yet to find its lead.

The news comes nearly a year after Riordan announced that he would be working alongside Disney to create a TV adaptation of the series.

The announcement also included insights into Disney and Riordan’s vision for the characters. For example, for the role of Percy Jackson, the series is looking for a young actor who can “play 12.” Additionally, the role will not be tied to a particular race.

“We are looking for the best person who can embody the character we all know and love from the books,” Riordan wrote in a blog post also announcing the casting update. “As with all casting choices, we will be following Disney’s company policy, which says: We are committed to diverse, inclusive casting. For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to disability, gender, race and ethnicity, age, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other basis prohibited by law.”

Previously, 20th Century Fox adapted Riordan’s first two novels in the series, The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters, for the big screen with Logan Lerman as the lead to negative reviews. Riordan later reflected on the films as his “life’s work going through a meat grinder.”

The two Percy Jackson films are currently available to stream on Disney+. Moreover, the legacy of Percy Jackson lived on most recently as the Broadway musical, The Lightning Thief starring Chris McCarrell as the lead character. Fans can listen to the Original Cast Recording of the musical on Spotify.

Actors looking to audition for the role can have their parents submit an audition video through Disney+ and 20th Century Fox’s open casting call.
