Shaka King is set to co-write the script, which will be set in modern times and cover various genres of film. King’s most famous directorial role – Judas and the Black Messiah – was nominated for countless awards this year. Its nomination for best picture at the Oscars was historic, marking the first time that an all-Black production team was recognized for the category.
King has found himself nominated for other prestigious titles in the past year, including PGA and WGA awards. He was recently received the “Someone to Watch” honor at the Independent Spirit Awards for his directorial work.

Meanwhile, Coogler is currently in Georgia filming the highly anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In addition, he had a part in creating Space Jam: A New Legacy set for a July 16 release.
Coogler will be joined in the production by comedian Howery, who starred in Get Out. The role earned him an MTV Movie & Television award, and a nomination for an NAACP Image Award. Most recently, Howery starred in Netflix’s Fatherhood and Bird Box.

The film is a project from Proximity and Charles D. King’s media platform, MACRO. King heads the company, which develops and finances projects that amplify the voices of Black people and people of color. It has done so for acclaimed movies such as Sorry to Bother You and Roman J. Israel.
Getting the team back together again for #shakaking ‘s next film 🙌 @IAmCharlesDKing @LilRel4 @stayMACRO #proximitymedia https://t.co/abdwFHnzj5

Little else is known about the plot, though some wonder if it will be inspired by the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot. Either way, this stellar team is bound to create something timely and spectacular. While we wait for details on the film, now seems like a good time to rewatch Judas and the Black Messiah streaming on HBO Max or Amazon.
