Halsey has shared the cover art for their upcoming album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, out on August 27. This will be Halsey’s fourth studio album; their last work had been Manic, released in January 2020.

Halsey unveiled the breathtaking cover art by heading to New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The singer happens to be a talented artist; therefore, their creative mind is always filled with crazy good ideas. Halsey’s cover looks to be straight out of a Renaissance painting, and in some ways, it is. The photo strongly resembles painter Jean Fouquet’s Virgin and Child Surrounded by Angels; a masterpiece painted back in the 15th century.

Halsey alluded to Fouquet’s painting in their poignant Instagram post. The post begins with Halsey revealing that If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power is a concept album. Halsey writes about the inspiration behind the album and discusses various dichotomies that exist within society. It explores the dichotomy between the joys and horrors that come with pregnancy and childbirth.

In another example, Halsey poses the dichotomy between The Madonna and The Whore, where they write, “The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully. My body has belonged to the world in many different ways the past few years, and this image is my means of reclaiming my autonomy and establishing my pride and strength as a life force for my human being.”

Halsey’s ending paragraph is also crucial. The image is celebrating a woman’s body, whether pregnant or post-partum. Halsey acknowledges that there is still a stigma surrounding a woman’s body type as well as breastfeeding. Halsey hopes this image goes beyond “freeing the nipple,” but rather looks at a woman with total admiration for carrying and bringing life into this world.

This cover photo is certainly a step in the right direction. This photo is stunning and serves as a small glimpse into the world of Halsey’s next era: motherhood. We could not be more excited to hear Halsey’s new album out next month. In the meantime, be sure to follow Halsey on Instagram for the latest updates.
