Disney+ Reveals Premiere Date and First Look at New Show ‘Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.’
Taking an ode from the 90’s hit TV show, Doogie Howser, M.D., Disney+ is rebooting the show with fresh faces and a new name, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. The original medical drama starred well-known actor Neil Patrick Harris and will now star someone you’ve probably seen before if you keep up with the growing number of Disney shows nowadays.
Disney+ recently announced that Peyton Elizabeth Lee, most known for her role in Andi Mack on Disney Channel, would play Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha. The new series will also feature the likes of Kathleen Rose Perkins (Big Shot) as Dr. Clara Hannon, Jason Scott Lee (Hawaii Five-0) as Benny Kamealoha, Matthew Sato (Chad) as Kai Kamealoha, Wes Tian as Brian Patrick Kamealoha, Emma Meisel (American Horror Story) as Steph, Mapuana Makia as Noelani and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman (UnREAL) as Charles. Guest stars include singer/songwriter Alex Aiono as Walter and Ronny Chieng (Young Rock) as Dr. Lee. The first season is expected to have 10 episodes and will premiere very soon, on September 8.
Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., will follow the ever-changing life of a teenage prodigy doctor and her journey to tackle saving lives and also keeping a social life at just the young age of 16. According to Deadline, the young doctor is guided by her “her spit-fire Irish mother who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, and her Hawaiian “Local Boy” father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl,” which embodies the struggles of a growing teenager and her family coming to terms with that. The reboot also highlights that this series is no longer focusing on a white family but a mixed-race family living in Hawaii, which should add a touch of difference to this newer adaption.
The reboot is written by Kourtney Kang, who had a hand in helping produce well-known shows such as Fresh Off the Boat, and the 2005 hit show How I Met Your Mother, Kang has had a hand in making some great comedy series. Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., appears to be her most recent project, and with her track record so far, the reboot should be nothing short of great. Along with the cast announcements and producing credits, Disney recently released the opening sequence for the show, bearing some of the same similarities to the original show, and has some fans of the original show hoping for a cameo from former cast members.

Doogie Howser was originally aired on ABC and focused on a much younger medical prodigy working his way through being a doctor at 14. The series went for four seasons from 1989-1993 and was created by Steve Bochco and David E. Kelley. Dr.Kamealoha and her story are based around the same idea from Bochco and Kelley and even features a reimagined version of the theme song performed by music composer Wendy Wang and ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro as featured in the video above.
