Rina Sawayama Appears on ‘Free Woman’ Track off Lady Gaga’s New ‘Dawn of Chromatica’ Remix Album

Lady Gaga has released her remix album Dawn of Chromatica, inspired by her latest record, Chromatica, released in May 2020. Dawn of Chromatica features a string of talented female artists such as Charli XCX, Bree Runway, and Rina Sawayama. Sawayama appears on the “Free Woman” remix.

“Free Woman” appears as Track 5 on Chromatica. The song has been celebrated for its empowering lyrics and overall message of a woman taking back power. Gaga opened up in an interview with Zane Lowe about “Free Woman,” explaining her PTSD and depression after surviving sexual assault at the hands of a music producer. Gaga reveals, “It’s compounded all of my feelings about life, feelings about the world, feelings about the industry, what I had to compromise and go through to get to where I am. And I had to put it there.”

Chromatica is a record filled with dance songs. Still, in clever Gaga fashion, these dance tracks are ways she has coped with the pain she has endured: PTSD, depression, past relationships, sexual assault, and her health battle with fibromyalgia. Gaga needed to find another artist who could celebrate this powerful message about women’s empowerment and healing, and she found it in Rina Sawayama.

After much speculation, Sawayama herself confirmed the news that she would appear on Dawn of Chromatica. After sharing her appearance on “Free Woman,” the “Chosen Family” singer also uploaded a 7-second teaser of what to expect.

On September 3, Sawayama shared “insane fan art” to her Instagram page, thanking fans for the remixed track’s love and support.

Fans love the collaboration and have even joked with Sawayama about singing “Free Woman” so effortlessly despite having braces. Sawayama calls that moment “a proper struggle.”
