Since its debut in 1932, the Venice Film Festival has gained notoriety for premiering Oscar-winning films and having celebrity appearances.
Variety revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pleaded for support from global cinema to raise awareness about their gruesome war with Russia. A video showcasing a black backdrop, and 358 names of children killed by Russia solidified the urgency of the President’s plea. He acknowledged cinema as a tool to confront otherwise uneasy topics. He states that when an important issue appears on screen “almost all spectators do only one of two things: either they get involved or they up and leave.”
Netflix’s White Noise kicked off the 11-day-festival being the first Netflix film to open the event in its history. Director Noah Baumbach’s quirky rendition of Don DeLillo’s 1985 apocalyptic novel follows university professor Jack Gladney and his wife Babette through the aftermath of a devastating chemical explosion.
The film boasts an esteemed cast starring: Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Don Cheadle (Iron Man), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen and Slim), May Nivola (Head Full of Honey), Raffey Cassidy (Tomorrowland), and Sam Nivola (The Pursuit of Love). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the action feature was well-received by the gala’s audience who gave it a three-minute standing ovation.
