Hulu Unveils Poster and Trailer for New Thriller Boston Strangler
Hulu and 20th Century Studios released a new trailer and poster for their new true-crime thriller. Starring Keira Knightley as Loretta McLaughlin, Boston Strangler, set to launch on March 17.
Hulu, known for its acclaimed series Only Murders in the Building and Pam and Tommy, will add one more original to its collection. Boston Strangler will tell the story of the real journalists who investigated the notorious Boston Strangler murders of the ’60s. Keira Knightley embodies Loretta McLaughlin as she connects the Boston Strangler murders amidst the misogyny of her 20th-century workspace. Carrie Coon will work alongside Knightley as journalist Jean Cole. Together, the duo will work together to uncover the truth behind the tragic mystery.
The film aims to uplift female voices and tackle the issues of sexism in the workplace. In a tweet showcasing the gorgeous new posters from 20th Century Studios, the company points out how the film will tell “their story” – the untold story of two women coming together against all odds to avenge the voiceless women victimized by the murders.

Knightley has a reputation for portraying strong women, and Boston Strangler is no exception. She honors McLaughlin’s spirit as a woman seeking truth and justice by her own means. For example, McLaughlin says in an article from the Boston Globe, “Why should anyone murder four obscure women? That was what made them so interesting… sisters in anonymity, like all of us.”
In her own way, McLaughlin represents vengeance for female brutalization and suppression. She honored victims of male violence when they would have been otherwise overlooked, even when she was being silenced. Knightley brings to life what the trailer calls an ‘untold true story’ of McLaughlin’s own life. In the trailer, Knightley’s character even asks her doubtful male counterpart: “How many women have to die before it’s a story?”
ABC Studios has released the trailer for their podcast Truth and Lies: The Boston Strangler, which will act as a companion to the film. Additionally, it marks the first collaboration between ABC Studios and 20th Century Studios, both of which are owned by Disney. The three-part narrative podcast will debut on March 1.
Kiera Knightley, known for other period films such as Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, and The Imitation Game, promises to stun audiences with her acting prowess. Alongside her, the film boasts a star-studded cast of Carrie Coon, David Dastmalchian, and Chris Cooper. The hype around the film has only grown with the trailer’s release, as each actor showcases their talent. Not only that, but producers behind films such as House of Gucci, The Martian, and I, Tonya, have involved themselves in making the film.
Truly, Boston Strangler is set up to respectfully honor both the victims of the strangler and the journalist who told their story.
Audiences can tune into ABC Studio’s podcast Truth and Lies on March 1 on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music. The film will be available for viewing exclusively on Hulu on March 17.
